It's kind of crazy how another semester has passed by, and now we're on our last one of high school. I feel like we've missed out on so much having to spend this year at home. As someone who finds friends and socializing one of the only good parts of school, taking classes away from Troy High really sucks. AP Lit was the class that kind of helped offset this though. I know we all hate those awkward break out rooms where you're forced to work on a project with someone you don't know, but english was honestly so enjoyable. Our break out rooms were a great opportunity for me to be able to talk about not only english, but broader topics as well. And that's what made this class so much better than lang, the fact that we could learn about things like existentialism, absurdism, tragedies, etc. instead of focusing on writing an in-class essay every single week. I learned about literature, for sure, but I also got to learn more about different perspectives in life and I really enjoyed that.
Death of a Salesman was one of my favorite reads. That kind of sounds cliché because it's one of the only books we read, but I really loved reading about Willy's struggle to become successful and achieve his American Dream. I know we've definitely all heard enough about American Dreams at this point, but Death of a Salesman really struck me hard, more so than The Great Gatsby. Biff is similar to us in so many ways. He's trying to find a way to earn a living, get the approval of his parents, and work while doing what he loves. Right now we're all thinking about our futures and it's pretty scary thinking about the possibility of failure. This got kind of morbid, but that's why Death of a Salesman was so relatable despite Biff's and Willy's age.
All in all, I've learned to appreciate English this year. Hopefully we'll get to learn more great things next semester :)
