I went into this poetry unit dreading everything. I didn't want to analyze poems because they're hard to read and hard to understand. I didn't want to write poems because that's like revealing your thoughts for everyone to judge. It hasn't been that long since we started but I'm already warming up to poetry. The Mentor Poet project, though the idea of a presentation had originally frightened me, is actually a pretty good opportunity. I was able to explore many different poets while searching for my mentor. I picked Sandra Lim and all the poems I have read have been so interesting despite my initial impression that poetry is usually boring and overly sentimental. Another part of the mentor poet project that I absolutely hated the thought of was having to present my own poem. However, after writing it I'm kind of excited to read others' poems and be able to see poems in a more relatable writing style (instead of a 19th century love poem or Shakespeare).
I think I've learned that you can only get comfortable with poetry, and with sharing your own poetry, by reading and writing it more. Of course, while I have opened up to poetry more, that doesn't mean that I enjoy every single one I read. So my point is that if you hate poetry, find a topic that you like, or a writing style that you like, and dive in head first.
